|In Full: After the Edinburgh Marathon my running mojo was Zero with a capital Z. After getting on the bus and for once saying no to a Mike Gill and a John Million shot, maybe it was returning. (Yes I said no! but had a couple on the way back)
Once we got off the bus it was amazing to see so many Black and Gold vests and a great club picture and one with the mayor as a bonus. A few bounders around me at the start line particularly Sarah Driver, about time she was in the club vest, good lucks all round and we are off.
Very fast start and extremely manic as everyone jostles for room. Weather warm and humid, not ideal conditions. Sarah passed me at around 3 miles and I noticed Dave Mitchell not too far ahead. At this point, two ladies from the Elvet Striders screamed “parkrun PB!” to which I laughed and replied “me too!”. There was great camaraderie amongst the runners.
As most people know the route is straight forward and as the song goes, along the Scotswood Road, not the most scenic but the sense of occasion more than makes up for it.
It was great to see Captain Ian Young giving huge encouragement as we headed into Blaydon, on the rise (for those new to the club, XC season will be here before we know it!), before we dropped down and looped round where the water station is. By this time I’d gone past Sarah and was hoping she would cling onto my shirt tails helping her to the end. She did – well done Missy Driver! I’d also gone past Dave Mitchell to which he responded with flying back past me, and words of encouragement were given.
Nice to see loads of non running bounders around the finishing point, giving loads of encouragement, that’s always canny mint and helps get you across the line.
